What is Auricular Acupuncture?

Auricular therapy, or ear acupuncture, originated in China over 2,000 years ago. It is considered a microsystem, with ear points corresponding to the entire body through the Macro-Acupuncture meridian channels. The ear reflects the body in the form of an upside-down fetus, mapping out connections to different body systems.
Over time, European physicians and researchers made additional discoveries, expanding auricular therapy’s knowledge base. Auricular stimulation, deeply rooted in both European and Western medicine, became available in the U.S. in the early 1970s. Dr. Paul Nogier, the system’s founder, published his extensive work on ear acupuncture in 1957 after observing ear points with either reduced electrical resistance or high conductivity. Today, a leading system in Europe is associated with Dr. Bahr of the German Academy and Paul Nogier. Marina Doktorman had the unique opportunity to study directly under Dr. Bahr at a conference in Vancouver, Canada, as well as with Dr. Ralph Nogier, MD (France) in Maryland, USA.
Auricular Acupuncture: A Natural Approach to Healing Through Ear Stimulation
Auricular stimulation on the ear’s skin, which is connected to the central nervous system (CNS), has been shown to increase blood serum levels of endogenous neurotransmitters, endorphins, and enkephalins. These substances are naturally produced in the brain and are linked to opiate receptors. Endorphins, in particular, play a scientifically proven role in the pain-relieving effects of acupuncture.
Paul Nogier (1983) explored the neurophysiological foundation of auriculotherapy and suggested that the nervous system’s innervation of the external ear corresponds to the three primary tissue types in the developing embryo. He theorized that the distribution of the three cranial nerves, which supply different regions of the ear, is connected to their embryological origins—the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. Most health issues, according to Nogier, stem from disturbances in these three functional layers:
- Endodermal tissue: The endoderm forms the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, and abdominal organs like the liver, pancreas, bladder, and urethra. It also contributes to the development of parts of the endocrine system, including the thyroid, parathyroid, and thymus glands. In auriculotherapy, this deep embryological tissue is represented in the concha, the central valley of the ear. Stimulating this area influences metabolic functions and addresses disorders of internal organs that stem from the endoderm.
- Mesodermal tissue: The mesoderm develops into skeletal muscles, cardiac muscles, smooth muscles, connective tissue, joints, bones, and blood cells produced by bone marrow. It also forms the circulatory and lymphatic systems, adrenal cortex, and urogenital organs. The proper functioning of this middle layer is essential for mobilizing the body’s defense mechanisms.
- Ectodermal tissue: The ectoderm gives rise to the outer skin, cornea, eye lens, nasal epithelium, teeth, peripheral nerves, spinal cord, brain, and endocrine glands such as the pituitary, pineal, and adrenal medulla. This tissue is represented on the earlobe and helix tail. It integrates instinctive information with learned experiences, reflecting its role in connecting external stimuli with the body’s internal responses.
Features of Ear Acupuncture at Pulse Acupuncture in Clifton, NJ
Ear pressure points are detected using the PointSelect Pro device, which emits a beeping sound when an active point is found. Once located, a needle is inserted for stimulation. Alternatively, PointSelect can be used in place of needles for treatment. After the session, ear seeds are often applied as part of ongoing self-care.
At Pulse Acupuncture, alongside treatments like electroacupuncture in Clifton auricular acupuncture is performed as part of a diagnostic method that finds disharmonies through ear examination. The ear is observed for any discolorations that would indicate internal organ pathology. The ear is also palpated to determine heightened tenderness. Sensory nerve sensation is represented on the anterior surface of the ear. Motor nerve muscle tension is represented on the posterior surface of the ear. A dermal point locator, the PointSelect Pro, is utilized to determine electrical skin resistance. Dr. Bahr developed frequencies of stimulation and detection of points.
