Acupuncture for Sinus

Table of Contents

Chronic sinus congestion, persistent facial pressure, and recurring nasal inflammation represent more than seasonal inconvenience — they reflect a systemic disruption in the body’s ability to maintain respiratory balance. At Pulse Acupuncture, led by Marina Doktorman, M.S., L.Ac., we treat the physiological root of sinus dysfunction rather than suppressing its surface manifestations. Our specialized sinus acupuncture protocols address the internal patterns driving each patient’s condition, delivering relief that lasts longer than a decongestant spray.

Many patients arrive at our clinic after years of relying solely on antihistamines, nasal steroids, or over-the-counter decongestants. While these interventions manage acute episodes, they do not resolve the underlying immune and fluid regulation imbalances that perpetuate chronic sinus disease. Patients often find themselves caught in a cycle of temporary suppression followed by recurrence — a pattern our holistic methodology is specifically designed to interrupt.

Our integrative approach recognizes that sinus conditions rarely exist in isolation. Chronic congestion frequently correlates with concurrent seasonal allergies and sinus congestion, fatigue, and disrupted sleep. By addressing the full physiological picture, we achieve outcomes that extend well beyond nasal clearance, resulting in measurable improvements in overall well-being.

Why Conventional Sinus Treatments Often Fall Short

acupuncture clinic

Western Medicine approaches sinusitis primarily through symptom suppression. Decongestants provide short-term nasal relief but can cause rebound congestion when used for more than 3 days. Antihistamines reduce histamine response without modulating the underlying immune dysregulation. Prolonged use of nasal steroids compromises mucosal integrity. Antibiotics address bacterial secondary infections but leave the terrain that generated them entirely unchanged.

None of these interventions addresses the internal imbalance perpetuating the condition. The result is a frustrating cycle of acute management without resolution — a framework that prioritizes the branch while ignoring the root. At Pulse Acupuncture, we specialize in resolving that root cause through Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostics and targeted acupuncture protocols, offering patients a structured path toward sustained physiological recovery.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Approach to Sinus Conditions

In TCM, sinusitis is not a single diagnosis — it is a pattern of internal disharmony. The classical category encompassing sinus disorders, Bi Yuan (鼻淵), describes a condition in which pathological fluids accumulate in the nasal cavities due to disrupted Qi dynamics, impaired Lung function, or invasion by environmental pathogens. Marina Doktorman performs a comprehensive intake — including tongue and pulse diagnosis — to identify the precise pattern driving each patient’s presentation. This diagnostic precision is what distinguishes a licensed L.Ac. from a standard clinical encounter.

Three primary TCM patterns account for the majority of sinus conditions we treat at Pulse Acupuncture. Each requires a distinct therapeutic protocol and a distinct selection of acupuncture points.

Wind-Cold and Wind-Heat Invasion: Acute Sinus Congestion

Acute sinusitis triggered by cold exposure or viral infection presents as a Wind invasion in TCM. Wind-Cold produces clear or white mucus, chills, body aches, and no fever. Wind-Heat manifests as thick yellow or green mucus, facial warmth, and a sore throat. Both patterns indicate an external pathogen penetrating the body’s defensive surface. Treatment prioritizes dispersing the pathogen and restoring free flow through the nasal passages using acupuncture at LU7 (Lieque), LI4 (Hegu), GV23, and LI20 (Yingxiang). Acute presentations typically respond within two to four sessions.

Lung Qi Deficiency and Wei Qi Weakness: Recurring Sinus Infections

Patients who experience recurring sinusitis, frequent colds, and incomplete recovery between episodes often present with Lung Qi Deficiency. When Lung Qi is insufficient, the body’s defensive energy — Wei Qi — fails to maintain the integrity of the body’s protective surface, leaving it vulnerable to repeated pathogen invasion. This pattern commonly underlies chronic allergic rhinitis and seasonal allergy presentations we treat at Pulse Acupuncture. Our protocol strengthens the Lung meridian through acupuncture at LU9 (Taiyuan), ST36 (Zusanli), and SP6 (Sanyinjiao), rebuilding immune resilience over a structured course of eight to twelve sessions.

Spleen Qi Deficiency and Dampness Accumulation: Chronic Thick Congestion

Persistent, heavy congestion accompanied by thick mucus, post-nasal drip, brain fog, and fatigue — particularly after consuming cold or raw foods — indicates Spleen Qi Deficiency and Dampness accumulation. When the Spleen fails to transform and transport fluids, Dampness accumulates, and Phlegm obstructs the sinus cavities. Treatment targets ST40 (Fenglong), SP9 (Yinlingquan), SP6, and ST36 to transform Dampness and restore Spleen function. Dietary guidance — reducing cold, raw, and dairy-rich foods — is integrated into every Dampness-pattern protocol at our clinic.

Targeted Acupuncture Relief for Sinus Pressure, Congestion, and Headaches

acupuncture for sinus

Each sinus presentation requires a tailored therapeutic approach. At Pulse Acupuncture, we differentiate between distinct clinical manifestations rather than applying a generic sinus protocol. This precision is central to the outcomes our patients consistently achieve.

Sinus Pressure Relief: Opening the Nasal Passages

Frontal and maxillary sinus pressure — the characteristic “mask” of facial heaviness — responds directly to acupuncture at LI20 (Yingxiang), positioned adjacent to each nostril. This point is the primary clinical intervention for acupuncture to relieve sinus pressure, producing measurable opening of the nasal passages within a single session. ST3 (Juliao) decompresses the cheek sinus zone, while BL2 (Zanzhu) addresses orbital and ethmoid pressure. Many patients report a perceptible shift in sinus congestion while still on the treatment table.

Sinus Headaches: Clearing Frontal and Temporal Pain

Sinus-driven headaches originate from frontal sinus expansion pressing against the forehead, temples, and orbital rim. Yintang (M-HN-3) — the point between the eyebrows — is the primary intervention for calming this frontal pressure. GB20 (Fengchi) at the base of the skull releases the full cranial tension pattern that typically accompanies sinus inflammation. For patients experiencing concurrent acupuncture for headaches and migraines, sinus treatment and cranial protocol are often combined in a single session.

Nasal Congestion and Post-Nasal Drip: Restoring Free Breathing

Chronic blocked nasal passages and persistent post-nasal drip are hallmarks of Phlegm-Dampness obstructing the upper respiratory tract. ST40 (Fenglong) — the master point for resolving Phlegm — is combined with LU7 (Lieque) to restore the Lung's capacity to circulate defensive Qi along the nasal passages. Acupressure for sinus congestion between clinical sessions, applied at LI20 and Yintang, reinforces treatment between appointments and provides patients with an active role in their own recovery. Our practitioners demonstrate these acupressure points for sinus self-care during each consultation.

How It Works: Acupuncture Points for Sinus Relief

The efficacy of sinus acupuncture is grounded in its capacity to modulate the nervous and immune systems simultaneously. When needles are placed at specific acupuncture points for sinus conditions, they stimulate the trigeminal nerve, reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-4 and IL-5, and promote lymphatic drainage from congested sinus cavities. This physiological cascade addresses both the acute inflammatory process and the chronic immune dysregulation sustaining it.

Our primary sinus acupuncture points, each selected for a distinct physiological function:

  • LI20 (Yingxiang) — opens nasal passages; the most direct point for acute congestion relief
  • ST3 (Juliao) — decompresses the maxillary and cheek sinus zone
  • Yintang (M-HN-3) — calms frontal sinus pressure and sinus-driven headaches
  • BL2 (Zanzhu) — clears ethmoid and orbital sinus congestion
  • LU7 (Lieque) — activates Lung Qi and restores the nasal passages’ defensive circulation
  • ST40 (Fenglong) — resolves Phlegm-Dampness, the root of chronic thick mucus

For patients requiring enhanced stimulation in chronic or fibrotic sinus presentations, electroacupuncture amplifies the anti-inflammatory response at these points.

Beyond Needles: A Multimodal Approach to Sinus Health at Pulse Acupuncture

Acupuncture forms the clinical foundation of every sinus treatment protocol at Pulse Acupuncture. However, sustained resolution of chronic sinus conditions frequently requires a multimodal strategy that addresses the internal environment contributing to ongoing dysfunction.

For Wind-Cold and Lung Qi Deficiency patterns, moxibustion applied to the upper back and Lung zone disperses Cold, strengthens Wei Qi, and accelerates nasal decongestion. Fire cupping along the Bladder meridian on the upper back opens the thoracic cavity. It promotes lymphatic drainage from the sinus region — a technique particularly effective for patients with concurrent chest tightness or post-viral congestion.

Marina Doktorman prescribes targeted Chinese herbal medicine for sinus conditions, including Bi Yan Pian for Wind-Heat presentations and Pe Min Kan Wan for chronic allergic rhinitis. These concentrated botanical formulas address the biochemical drivers of sinus inflammation between sessions, providing continuous therapeutic support and reducing the frequency of acute flare-ups for patients whose chronic congestion is worsened by stress-driven immune suppression. Protocols for acupuncture to address stress are frequently integrated into the treatment plan.

Sessions additionally incorporate aromatherapy with eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils to support nasal passage opening and enhance respiratory comfort throughout the treatment. For patients experiencing disrupted sleep due to chronic nasal obstruction, addressing the sinus condition inherently resolves concurrent acupuncture for insomnia — a pattern we observe consistently in our clinical practice.

Seven weeks ago, I was dealing with a herniated bulging disc and constant pain. I tried physical therapy, but it was extremely painful and didn’t help. Someone suggested acupuncture, and I found Pulse Acupuncture through my insurance, the best decision I’ve made.
I had the pleasure of working with Marina, Laryssa, and Jaesung, and they have all been absolutely amazing. Thanks to this incredible team, I can now sit, drive, walk, sleep comfortably, and function normally again. I truly don’t think I’d be where I am today without their care and expertise.
Pulse Acupuncture has become my go-to place for anything pain-related. The entire team is warm, compassionate, and professional, with outstanding bedside manners.
I highly recommend Pulse Acupuncture to anyone experiencing pain and looking for effective, non-invasive treatment. Truly life-changing! 😊

I had an excellent experience with Marina at Pulse Acupuncture. She took time to understand what was going on, explained the process clearly, and the treatment itself was incredibly soothing. I noticed a real shift afterward — less tension, more ease, and a calm that actually lasted. I’m so grateful and will definitely be back.

I absolutely adore this place and the two women who work there. I came in at the end of my marathon training weeks before the race and they worked miracles on me -- taking a personalized and thoughtful approach for each session. In addition to treating my pains and aches, they also did stress treatments on me when they knew I needed it the most. I will be back there, and really can't say enough positive things.

Greatest acupuncture, environment, service, practitioners. Laryssa was my practioner today. She was extremely knowledgeable about both western and eastern medicine, and was thoughtful and purposeful with the treatment choices. She discussed her thinking, gave suggestions about diet and posture, as well as exercise and meditation. This was delivered in a gentle, non pressuring way. The space was spotless, care was taken in every aspect possible. Thank you for the great experience. I can't wait to meet Dr. Marina who accomodated my schedule and made sure I would be seen even though I was running late. Both she and Laryssa have treated my daughter as well and she feels so well from the care.

My experience with Marina's work has been incredible. After the first few sessions, I immediately noticed a decrease in my endometriosis symptoms. I also struggle with CPTSD and anxiety-- and have felt extremely lighter since seeing her. She is thorough and knows what she is doing. I go twice a week and will eventually start tapering my sessions, but think it is imperative to go often when first starting out. I am addicted to her practice and cannot recommend her more!

I have been doing acupuncture consistently for 3.5 years, started with Marina almost 3 years ago and also started seeing Larissa this last year.

Acupuncture has truly changed my life and has helped me in ways I didn’t even know were possible.

I started doing acupuncture to balance my hormones after 2 years of unsuccessful fertility treatments. When I started seeing Marina, my periods were starting to be regular and I was dealing with a few different symptoms which we started treating right away (constipation, random headaches, body aches)… in the last 3 years I have not been sick (no flu, have never tested positive for COVID) - Marina even treated me for allergies more than a year ago during an allergy episode in changing seasons.

Also want to mention Larissa as I started seeing her in Marina’s beautiful office and she’s also contributed to my wellness journey. Acupuncture is my favorite wellness practice, I see them regularly and have never felt better. I sometimes just tell them whatever I’m thinking/feeling knowing they will stick some needles in different places of my body and I come out floating and feeling so relaxed.

Clinical research supports acupuncture as an effective intervention for chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis. A 2022 peer-reviewed systematic review and meta-analysis found significant improvement in nasal symptoms and quality of life in adults with allergic rhinitis compared to no treatment and sham acupuncture. At Pulse Acupuncture, our clinical outcomes consistently reflect these findings — particularly in patients who have not responded adequately to conventional pharmaceutical management.

The number of sessions depends on the nature and duration of the sinus condition. Acute presentations — such as congestion following a viral infection — typically respond within two to four sessions. Chronic sinusitis or recurrent allergic rhinitis requires a structured course of 8 to 12 sessions, followed by monthly maintenance to sustain results. Marina Doktorman establishes an individualized treatment plan at the initial consultation based on TCM pattern diagnosis.

Acupuncture is safe to combine with most conventional sinus and allergy medications. Our clinic reviews each patient's complete medication list during the initial intake. Many patients find that as acupuncture treatment progresses and sinus symptoms stabilize, their reliance on antihistamines or decongestants diminishes naturally — though any adjustments to prescription medications should always be coordinated with the prescribing physician.

Acupuncture needles are significantly finer than hypodermic needles and cause minimal discomfort upon insertion. Patients receiving sinus acupuncture may notice a mild sensation of pressure or warmth at LI20, adjacent to the nostrils — a response that indicates effective stimulation of the point. Most patients experience progressive relaxation throughout the session and frequently report an immediate sense of nasal opening. Sessions at Pulse Acupuncture are conducted in a calm, spa-like environment designed to facilitate therapeutic rest.
